UCLG-MEWA
UNITED CITIES AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS
MIDDLE EAST AND WEST ASIA SECTION
GENERAL INFORMATION
International
Union of
Local
Authorities, East
Mediterrenean
and
Middle East
Section,
that
briefly
denoted as IULA-EMME,
has been
established in
Ýstanbul on te
decision of
Council of
Ministers of
11/09/1987, no. 87/12105, in
accordance
with
the
Law no. 3335 of
26/03/1987, article
1. The
main
objectives of IULA-EMME,
which is a
non-profit
organization, is
to
develop
local
democracy
and
support
local
governments.
IULA- International
Union of
Local
Authorities-, as
the
mother
organization
that IULA-EMME has
been
bound
to
being
one of
the
its 7
regional
organizations
all
over
the
world, had
been
established in 1913
and has
functioned as
the
oldest
and
biggest
association on
local
governments
till 21.
century.
IULA World
Organization
and FMCU-UTO (Fédération
Mondiale
des
Cités
Unies-United
Towns
Organization)
have
been
combined,
incorporating
METROPOLIS also,
after a
long
process
started
with Habitat II
Conference in
Ýstanbul, under
the name “United
Cities
and
Local
Governments
World
Organization”
United
Cities
and
Local
Governments,
whose
headquarters
are
located in
Barcelona -
Spain, has
started
its
activities in
January 2004.
Its
The
main
objective of
the
organization is,
“to be
the
united
voice
and global
advocate of
democratic
local
governments,
and
to
protect
their
values,
objectives,
and
interests in
cooperation
with
local
governments
and
international
community”.
UCLG World
Organziation, has a
decentralized
administrative
and
elective
structure
that
was
divided
into
those seven
regional
sections
all
over
the
World:

Asia-Pacific
·
Eurasia
·
Europe
·
South America
·
Middle
East and West
Asia
·
North America
IULA-EMME has also
been
functioning
under
the name
UCLG-MEWA – United
Cities
and
Local
Governments,
Middle East West
Asia
Section in
line
with
this
new
structuring in
World
Organization since
2004.
The
geographical
region of UCLG-MEWA
covers
these
countries:
Afghanistan,
Bahrein, Iran,
Iraq,
Jordan,
Kuwait,
Lebanom,
Oman, Pakistan,
Palesitine,
Qatar,
Saudi
Arabia,
Syria,
Turkey,
United
Arab
Emirates
and Yemen.
